Wes watched as Tricia slept, lying snuggled next to him. He fought the myriad feelings he was experiencing. No woman had ever pulled at his heart like she was doing. He’d never brought a woman to his cabin, to the place where he lived. That was his private place, and he didn’t want a woman to change that. Usually, he went to their place, and they had sex, and he went home. He always left while they were still friends, before anyone’s feelings were involved. He didn’t want to hurt anyone, and he wasn’t ready to open his heart to a woman. But Tricia was different, and that worried him. He gently touched her long hair, marveled at the silky feel of her and realized she was chipping away at his heart.
He knew she was a strong woman. She’d have to be to run her own company. And he knew it was a successful company, a fact that he wished he could talk to her about. But he couldn’t. Right now was not the time to talk to her about business.
She turned over, and he saw the peaceful look on her face. It was like a little girl, vulnerable to the world, and he was the big, strong knight there to protect her. Chuckling at the thought, he settled down next to her and breathed in her scent.
He’d never felt this way before. He’d never wanted to protect anyone. And even as his mind fought the feelings, he put his arm over her waist and closed his eyes.

“Morning, sleepy head,” Wes called out, bringing Tricia awake. She shook her head and rubbed her eyes, then looked around the room before realizing she’d spent the night in his cabin. The sun streamed through the window, causing her to squint at its brightness.
Outside a hummingbird flitted near the window, and she smiled.
Gazing up at him, she blushed. Thoughts of the intimate things they’d done filled her mind. Her body ached in places she’d never felt before.
“Don’t have much to offer you for breakfast, but I found some bagels and coffee. Will that work?” Wes stood before her, carrying a glass and brass bed tray filled with food, his smile happy, his eyes twinkling.
“You’re a godsend.” Tricia laughed, pushing her uneasiness away and pulling up the sheet to cover her nakedness.
He grinned wickedly at her motions then sat next to her on the bed. Taking a bagel already spread with a spicy cream cheese, he lifted it for her to take a bite.
“God, that’s good.” She took the bagel from him and bit into it again. Once that bite was fully chewed, she looked at Wes. His hair hung down his back, and he appeared to have just gotten out of the shower. He wore nothing but a towel wrapped around his middle, but he was comfortable in his state of undress.
“Think I’ll join you,” he said as he took a bite of a bagel.
She smiled at the white cheese that stayed on the right side of his mouth. Wiping it off with her forefinger, she then put it into her mouth and sucked the cream cheese off.
“Better be careful or you’ll be chained to the bed all day so I can make love to you over and over.” Wes growled and kissed her.
“Promises, promises.”
